A DAY OF PLAYING WITH DOLLS

Time for dolls!  I have been working off and on with  my little collection, that will be included  within 2 shows the latter part of the year.     "What in the world?" (hey . .  . I can hear you out there)  Just love playing with my hands to see  where they will lead me. I relish finding  objects while walking, as well as little  treasures from stores.  And this little delight while still in develop- ment, is half woman / half elephant. I have  big plans for her, so stay tune to see what will  become of her. Also pictured above is a  "bird walking".

A WINTERS NIGHT CLOAK

LUSH GARDENS * 24"h x 18"w pastel + gold frame * Courtesy of Tirage Gallery Guided by an old stone wall, I ventured  into a garden. The lush greenery encircled me as a cloak, that added warmth on a cold winters night. Soothing . . .  Comforting . .  . At peace with the soul. * "Lush Gardens" will be at Tirage Gallery for "The 31st State" exhibit opening March 24th. Please click here for additional or sales information.

TO CARD . . . OR NOT TO CARD?

KITTY LOVES CHOCOLATE 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" pastel SOLD - PRIVATE COLLECTOR The other day I was in a store being assisted by a  young clerk, who requested to see my drivers license. I told her that it was current with the exception of a new post office box number, for my former post office was one of the closed casualties. At that point the young girl commented how she got a small group of friends to start sending each other letters and cards, for it was such a thrill to receive something! Which in turn started me thinking . . .  With technology, everyone is tuned in, to every facet imaginable. But how many actually observe the events posted in Facebook? I haven't.  So it's really has become an unique experience to open one's home mailbox and receive mail. To actually hold  something in one's hands, makes an individual stop and really observe a special occasion. So how many artists out there, still send out promotional post cards for shows? I do,

OLD + THE NEW

ENTWINED 7"h x 5"w white pencil + painted glass 15"h x 13"w die-cut white + gold leaf  antique frame $250 + $15 insured priority shipping So now it's time to play quietly by myself. Found an antique, die-cut leaf metal frame  that was so unique! Thought it was fitting for  a couple of delicate calla lilies. I created the art with white pencil onto a black  base and extended the leaf motif onto the glass, by painting reverse with acrylics.

STARFISH + KELP - 12 x 6 glass

STARFISH + KELP 12" x 6" glass with a  brushed silver frame etched, blasted, gold leaf + paint $475 ©Susan E. Roden + Nancy Arthur-McGehee So I'm still playing here with my buddy Nancy. We created Starfish + Kelp which is one of the few remaining pieces  from our former exhibit. She etched and blasted the glass, whereas I  painted the reverse of the pane with acrylics  and then applied gold leaf. The piece has incredible depth from an added bottom layer of a mirror. What truly made the project fun, was the unknown factor.  After a discussion of subject matter, one would take  the piece to start off and create an image. Then in turn, hand  it over to the other to finish off.

THE JOY OF COLLABORATION!

ANGEL* Sold - Private Collector 8" square glass, pencil + paint Detail of collaborative piece by Susan Roden + Nancy Arthur-McGehee Do you admire greatly  another Artist? Wonder  how in the world they  do what they do?  Well by embracing some  collaboration you will see  new personal growth and direction, as well as deepened friendships.  Nancy Arthur-McGehee  is  not only my friend, but an  incredible artist! She etches   glass, is a lapidary, and a scientific illustrator. Some time ago she informed  me that one could paint and  draw onto glass. Pastels,  pencils + paint - amazing!  Out came our pencils to  schedule some play-dates,  where we both got to  experience the others medium.  Crab Decanter ©Nancy Arthur-McGehee Etched + blasted glass decanter And two very successful art  exhibitions resulted from our  collaboration. Above left is a  detail of Angel , one collaborative  piece. The show was to be of  salt water species, but Nancy  humored me for I want

WHAT AM I EVER UP TO?

I realized with my last  posting, Changes  In  Life , was kind of  ambiguous, so I guess  I better clarify where I  was going with that. I  have been doing quite  a bit of thinking of my  artistic path. Seems  I lost my way a bit  ago. Ever happened  to you?  After much soul  searching and  evaluating, I decided  to make some changes.  First I will be posting and focalizing on larger pastel pieces. Secondly, I will be writing on personal artistic influences, thought processing,  unique techniques and mediums, with interspersing of prose.  I know many have been following my little sweet treats and Donut  War, while others have enjoyed my petite sunsets, so am sorry if I  disappoint anyone. I can assure you there will be postings of petite  pastels, but as preludes and sketches to larger pieces.  Also there will be explanations of my more controversial art, i.e. the  deconstructed art, as well as new art form where I merge figurative  with animals in a mixed medium format on wooden c
