SMUDGES + LINES

CHARCOAL SKETCH Sketching here and there as samples for my Thursday evening drawing classes at UCSD Extension. Fortunate to have such a small, intimate and fun-loving  group of adults! This past week they drew each other in 12-minutes spurts. Interesting to see their developing individualistic styles!   This is a 10-minute sketch of myself as a prepared sample.

BELLS, LIGHTS + VEGAS, BABY!

ME + VEGAS Ha! I'm sure everyone little one of you thought I have been painting  away and here I am playing in the Land of Sin! Actually I was  working - just part of the time - at a framers convention.  Yep . . .  I'm a tad smarter! Anyway . . .   one of the so very fun things we discovered was an "Art-o-Rama" machine. I've read about them and even was a recipient of one of  these, but had never seen one before. These transfigured cigarette  machines are located typically in Art Museum gift shops and here in  shiny, noisy, glitzy Vegas are 2 sweet machines.  You put a $5 bill into the machine and Voila! . . .  out pops a tiny piece of art. Now how cool is that? So the center pic is me holding my little piece by Judy Hurwitt ,  a mixed media artist. Now that's Vegas Baby!

HERE'S LOOKING AT ME

SUSAN 12"h x 9"w pastel sketch Very intimidating to paint oneself. After all, do you  think we perceive ourselves as others? I look so serious! Hmmmmm . . . . .  Need to expand my knowledge for the students in my  upcoming pastel portrait workshop at the San Diego Museum  of Art and the Intermediate Drawing classes at UCSD Extension.  So have been plugging away and revisiting with different papers and styles of execution.  Too easy to get cozy with a constant style.  So let's experiment!

FEELING HELPLESSLY GIDDY + LUCKY!

The other day I was looking for treasures, as I strolled down an alley. Lo and behold what did I spy? That's right, a lotto ticket that was only part-way scratched!  My felt so fortunate . . .  ecstatic . . .  and giddy,  as I frantically searched my pockets for a penny.  My eyes popped with visions of big fortunes,  for after all,  I didn't spend any money to purchase  it, so it must be a sign.  Ta-dah . . .  I won another ticket! The giddiness I felt, was similar to the emotion  experienced when entering juried art shows. That  anticipation is so tangible. Now you ask, what great fortune did the 2nd ticket  bring?  Ta-dah . . . not a darn thing.
