Pastel Workshop at SDMA with SUSAN RODEN!

FLORAL WORKSHOP Study + gestural drawing of Sunflowers Well I sure have been missing lately and this is one of the reasons. Have been preparing for the Second Saturday pastel workshop, to be held at San Diego Museum of Fine Art   on April 11th.  Feel so very fortunate especially since this is concurrent with "Art Alive". This is a wonderful event in it's 34th year, that utilizes florals to interpret works of art. The workshop will cover gestural drawing and creating a floral pastel from life. Above is a sample. ROLLING BEACH -9" x 7" pastel on cardboard by Susan Roden

ROLLING BEACH 9" x 7" pastel I've been gearing up to instruct a workshop coordinated  with the "Sorolla and America" exhibit at San Diego Museum of Art.  Sorolla was known to grab anything to sketch on a daily basis and many times it was onto cardboard. So the workshop is creating seascape sketches with pastel washes onto cardboard.  Above  "ROLLING BEACH" is one completed example. I found  the substrate suitable with enough texture to grip the pastels, as well  as being a good mid-tone for an underbase.  The workshop will be held Saturday, July 12th from 1- 4:30pm. Click here for additional information and to sign up. A docent tour is included with the workshop!

HERE'S LOOKING AT ME

SUSAN 12"h x 9"w pastel sketch Very intimidating to paint oneself. After all, do you  think we perceive ourselves as others? I look so serious! Hmmmmm . . . . .  Need to expand my knowledge for the students in my  upcoming pastel portrait workshop at the San Diego Museum  of Art and the Intermediate Drawing classes at UCSD Extension.  So have been plugging away and revisiting with different papers and styles of execution.  Too easy to get cozy with a constant style.  So let's experiment!
