2 GREAT SUMMER CLASSES by Susan Roden

CLASSES, TEACHING + PAINTING   I have been so busy teaching as well as painting! Above are two abstract pastels created for demos during  two classes at Oasis / ABQ.  On the left was created at the first class in May and the  right was from this past week. The classes were learning  of representational and non-representational abstracts.  They had vases of florals for inspiration.  Now I have upcoming eight-week classes at the New Mexico Art League on the dynamics of strokes and substrates.  Fun, fun, fun!

ROLLING BYE - southwest landscape by Susan Roden

ROLLING BYE 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" pastel white mat, glass + black frame $155 - tax and shipping inclusive  This is another petite pastel that I created to showcase during my  recent class on pastel washes.  Just so much movement!  One can almost feel the clouds passing.

STACKED + FLOWING - 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" pastel landscape by Susan Roden

STACKED + FLOWING 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" pastel on sanded paper 8" square white mat and black frame $155 - shipping + tax inclusive I've been off with a busy life  . . . who would believe during a pandemic? In the time I've been MIA, I  conducted a pastel class for Oasis/ABQ. That truly was an experience! I love teaching yet it was so difficult with keeping a 6' distance and wearing a mask for the duration of the class. I was actually abled to cover more material yet sure did a lot of talking! Exhausted when all was done.  So pictured above, Stacked + Flowing  is one example for the class on paste l washes. I feel there is a lot of movement capturing the flight of clouds.

A REGAL LOOK (detail) - 10" round pastel on wood by Susan Roden

A REGAL LOOK * 10" round pastel on wood panel *detail of image And this is the second piece I worked on  for two hours at life drawing yesterday.  Only about halfway done, but you can see  my layering to build up the image.  The first layer is created with a pastel wash  to build up a mid-tone.Then the top sequential  layers are pastel strokes, alternating between  blunt to broad strokes.   Really liking the wood as a substrate . . .  fun, fun, fun!

YELLOW - 10" round pastel on wood by Susan Roden

YELLOW 10" round pastel on wood Wednesday is a day I typically go to life drawing.  So wonderful to be immersed in the art of painting  from life! And I enjoy immensely on trying different  supports and techniques.  Above, YELLOW , is a sketch completed in 45 minutes.  This is on a wooden base and executed with underlying  pastel washes. I've been playing here for am giving a class in November at Oasis on pastel washes with still lifes. More about that coming up later! Below, RED CROSS ,  is the warm-up sketch I created  during the same session. This is the 2nd and the  wood substrate measures 7" x 4 1/2". This was created as a preliminary facial study and to see the effectiveness of washes onto the wood base.  Really like what I have going on!  RED CROSS  7" x 4 1/2" pastel on wood
