TANGLED - mixed media on wood by Susan Roden

TANGLED 11" mixed media tondo on wood Life can be quite messy . . .  akin to a heavily wooded forest. Tree limbs reaching upward . . .  intertwined. A mass of green leaves . . . hiding the sun's rays.  A mess . . . and tangled.

A FOREST - mixed media by Susan Roden

A FOREST 11" round mixed media on wood  Do you have days where you feel as if you're deeply  in a forest, lush and green, yet the path is lost? Which  direction should be taken to regain your footing? Which opportunities should you grab?  Or do you look at it as a forest comforts and ensconces  you from bad happenings? A deep, green womb. Or do you feel your life is so stressful and overwhelmed, thus you're lost in a forest?   So many alternatives . . .  frankly, I'm seeking comfort.

Degrees of Loneliness - #1, 10" x 10" mixed media by Susan Roden

DEGREES OF LONELINESS - #1 10" x 10" round mixed media on wood This is the current central piece within the  collection of  Degrees  of Loneliness, which addresses  the fallacy that all elderly people are depressed and  lonely. The collection reflects landscapes and  skyscapes in various stages of sunsets to indicate  levels of depression. Statistics reveal that the  percentage of depressed are actually very minimal. #1 reflects an encroachment of sad emotions on the right side, yet the gold leaf underneath and  which grounds the shrubs, signifies the day is  bright and hopeful.

DEGREES OF LONELINESS mixed media on 7" wood circles + 11" wood circle hand-prints, acrylic, pencil + gold leaf Well I have returned to Albuquerque, but will be posting art created and shown in California during my residency  at the Desert Dairy Farm .  Above, Degrees of Loneliness, are wood circles  created in mixed mediums to portray the varied stages  of loneliness and depression. This is included within the project, Aging . . . a female's perspective, which  is still in development, but am happy to report  a great portion was created during the residency!  Degrees of Loneliness addresses the fallacy that all    elderly people are depressed and lonely. Some are,  but a large portion are not for no longer have the  restrictions of daily lives. Many travel, volunteer  or go onto second careers. I envision this display to grow in quantity with  additional circular scenes of darkened trees and  varied stages of...

Developing a project I begun some  time ago, which is the female perspective on aging. Pictured is a work in progress of Venus de Milo. Other art is being created  upon dresses which I am painting, sewing and stitching.  More will follow soon!  And below is a slice of the desert's life.

Opening of Diptych at the Aux Dog Theatre of Albuquerque!

DAWN OF PUBERTY 13"h x 12"w pastel Friday was the opening night for the 9 performances of  DIPTYCH  at the Aux Dog Theatre ! This is the world-premiere  and created specifically for the X-Space of the Aux Dog Theatre.  The storyline created by Mark Dunn, charters the life relationship of a Mother & her artistic Daughter. The  mother is represented by actor Kathleen Welker and the  daughter is portrayed through my 32 pieces of pastels and  mixed media art. Below are some scenes from this past weekend and the  public's reception has been fantastic!

PURPLE MOUNTAINS 3 1/4" x 2 1/4" pastel + acrylic on wood Nothing like a mini!  Been playing over here, but of course  with my clouds. Amazing the texture one can achieve from wood and acrylics.  And even though this is petite, I sure feel the movement of the clouds . . .  a beautiful day!

A LITTLE OF THIS + A LITTLE OF THAT

DOLL + ANIMAL PRINTS tonal hand print, acrylic + pencil 6"h x 4"w Off I go . . .  for it's playtime! And today was about using a combination  of mediums to achieve varied effects. With use of imagery from my doll and animal art,  I'm hand-printing onto bristol paper, then enhancing  with acrylic washes and graphite pencil. Next I'll be experimenting with printing onto  fabric - which I have done in the past with other  projects and love the effect. Whichever I like the  most will be framed to hang with the dolls for my  upcoming shows.  Have to dash and cut up some fabric . . .  bye!
